Default Jetta Skid Plate

How important is the front skid plate beneath the oil pan? Is it necessary to have?

is it a plastic piece or a metal one? either way, it shouldn't be a big deal whether it is on or not. if you don't have it on, just dont take your car offroading and don't try to run over curbs. if it is plastic, then it has 2 functions, the first and what it does most is help to cover the under side of the engine bay so it won't look so open. the other and lesser of the functions would be to slightly help direct air up into the engine bay to help cool the motor better, but it won't make much difference either way.
