Default Heater control

My heater dial has no control, it stays on hot. My mechanic believes a piece of plastic broke causing the control problem. He says I need a new heater box ????, at about $600-$700 cdn and about 10 to 11 hours of labor. This sounds insane. Any help would be great.

Default RE: Heater control

Further info, The dial attaches to a lever, the lever attaches to a cylinder like plastic part. That cylinder part has 2 hooks on it. One of mine is broken off, I need the cylinder like thing. VW says I need the entire heater box. Any help would be great.
