Default Head Gasket/Timing Belt Blown Valves?

Ive got a 1992 jetta diesel 1.6 and i just had to replace the head gasket and the timing belt. When i started the job, i rotated the cam crankshaft untill i was able to lock the injection pump and lock the camshaft. I then went about the job and while trying to remove my coolant pump sprocket, my timing belt skipped and the cam moved a little. Iquickly cut off the timing belt and then moved the cam back into position. I replaced the head gasket and timing belt, and i ended up removing the camshaft to clean up around it. i put the cam shaft back the way i believed it came out, with the peg in the end to lock it. and the injection pump never moved because of the peg i had in its sprocket. Today i tried to start it up and it made a horrible loud metallic clacking sound. so i quickly stopped trying to start it.Now im scared ****less that my valves are blown. I tried to move the camshaft with a socket wrench on the camshaft sprocket bolt but i met an abrupt stop. Is my engine toast? what are my chances of having ruined a valve? Is it just being squeaky to get started again? I'm lost and alone and scared and cold someone help me! My legs are tired from biking to work.
Thanks!
