Good Buy or Not?

http://huntsville.craigslist.org/cto/1018367304.html

Take a look at this and tell me what you think. Its an 87 2dr Jetta. After I emailed the craigslist post the owner told me it had over 100k miles and he wants $600 for it. I know absolutely nothing about VW autos. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Good Buy or Not?

Buying cars this old is very tricky. I know you probably have tight budget but if you can get a technician who's familiar w/ the cars you are looking then you will have better chance to filter the not so good ones. A general idea is not to push yourself to buy because you are excited about cars or you have to drive 40 miles to see it, if you don't FEEL good with the car in some way, stay away from it. You not only need to consider the engine, drive train, price, etc, but also some future cost like tires, body work.

Just my 2 cent, since I've bought several used cars for myself, some good, some bad.

i think with the fact its an 87 it really doesnt matter what type of vehicle it is or how much you know about that vehicle. its old and its $600...with any old or used car there are going to be problems...the older it is...the more problems you will find. vws are greatly made cars, but when something does go wrong its a little extra of a cost to fix it. i guess you cant really go wrong for the price...you will just have to worry about what problems could arise after you own it.
