Default cv joint on lowered jetta

My son purchased a 97 jetta that had been lowered 2 to 3 inches off the ground. When he purchased the car we knew it needed a wheel bearing on the front passenger side it was so bad we ended up replacing the hub, wheel bearing and cv joint assembly including outer and inner cv joint. The problem now is , the axle broke about 1/2" behind the threads where the mounting nut goes. My question; is there something we need to do are check to make sure we don't have more problems like this. ie: were the proper procedures and parts used when the car was lowered originally, was a step left out etc.??? We never had a car that was lowered this far. This is all new to us, any advice at all would be very helpful.

A car can only lowered 1.5 to 2 inches effectively and you need a sway bar and sway bar links for a lowered car to align things up.

It's too low and things aren't aligned right. The axle is slamming into the sway bar over bumps.

By not in alignment I meant the axles angle. Does it have good aftermarket springs on it or has someone just cut the factory ones? Because it sounds like it is too low if it's breaking axles. ecstuning.com has everything you need.

It has good after market springs! The guy at Tony's alignment told me he thought I needed a camber kit and an alignment ,but he would have to look at it to give me a quote as to what I really needed. Thanks again you really put me on the right track,as I am new to working on a lowered vw or any lowered vehicle. So you can teach an old dog new tricks....
