clutch pedal stays on the floor

Hi - my clutch pedal on my 1997 Jetta 2.0 stays on the floor. It has a cable versus hydraulics to lift the clutch.
So I replaced the cable , the throw out bearing (which seemed fine) but still same problem.
Cannot shift into gears. It "seems" I can get it into reverse but when forcing the pedal up it still does not engage the tranny.
I inspected internal parts while I took off the housing for the throw out bearing and things looked fine to me - the bearing was fine , the clutch rod was fine, the clutch lever with the spring on it seemed fine also. Even the tranny fluid looked fine - clean , no metal chips.
Anyone have any idea on why the pedal does not come off the floor and of course why I can't get into gear?

thank you in advance:mad:

Your Jetta clutch is hydraulic not cable.

Clutch pedal on floor

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. With all due respect - I changed the clutch cable - so this is a cable driven clutch not hydraulic - the CABLE moves the clutch lever up and down which pushes on the throw out bearing and then the clutch pushrod and thus engages the clutch.

If there is a part of this I am missing I am not sure what - I did take the housing off to expose the throw out bearing, clutch lever and clutch pushrod.

thanks

Well thats the first Jetta that I've heard of having a clutch cable.

Hello - yes cable is quite popular (could be a US thing). You can google "clutch pedal stats on floor" and see many sites helping to fix this cable.
I think my issue is related to pressure plate since when I looked at the push rod it is stuck in and should stick out a bit. Most likely it has pushed through the pressure plate but won't know unless I drop the tranny.
Thanks

Ok have somone watch the movement of the cable it could be your pedal assemble as the cable goes through the fire wall. I had the same problem on a rabbit the weld broke where the cable sits
Let me know

It was pressure plate that failed. Sold the car. Thanks for the help

So was it the clutch cable or the pressure plate that was causing your problem?

Cable was fine. Pressure plate was bad
