Question A/C clicking?? normal or not

I own a 2002 VW 1.8T JETTA and recently I noticed a clicking sound under the hood that stops when I turn off the A/C. The A/C still blows cold air, but when I turn it on it makes this annoying sound that is louder when a car pulls up next to me. Does anyone know what the problem might be or is it normal and I have never heard it before because I blast my music? Should I stop using the A/C? Any input would be great. Thanks!
