battery light on and temp light flashing

battery light on and temp light flashing
Hi,
2010 Jetta 2.5 gas. The battery light came on, and the water temp gauge went to the max and the light started flashing. Car still drives fine.
Any ideas?
This is for my Son who is in College at ASU. I posted a previous threas with the wrong info, my bad.

Welcome to the forum. 
You need to get your motor scanned for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them. AutoZone will do a free scan in the hope you buy something of them.
