97 Jetta Exhaust System question

New owner to a used silver 97' Jetta Trek and so far im loving it, but it definetly needs some improvements. I noticed that it has both a center and rear muffler.

I was just wondering is the center muffler neccessary or can it be replaced by say a connecting exhaust pipe instead?

The reason I ask is that it seems like I will need to replace the center muffler some time soon, but to me the exhaust system right now looks funky with that kind of design. It looks like it may have been a custom job by a previous owner.

yha i wouldn't see why not. now it will be a bit louder and stuff (i'm sure you knew that) but not to much louder. also if you need to pass emisions that might afect that but not enough to make you fail. (i would not worry about that)

RE: 97 Jetta Exhaust System question

Yeah I figured those would be some of the possibilities. I'll have to give it some more thought. The last thing I need is to fail the emissions test.

I've had some time to look for a center muffler, but most of them are expensive and they seem only less than average. They dont seem to peak my interest in performance or style.

Anyways thanks for the quick reply.

I would just get a whole new cat-back system....I have magnaflow 2.5in and it throws a deep sound out, it's great cause it doesn't sound ricy or anything. Plus I notice a heck of an improvement is power, and acceleration too.

I have a 98 Jetta and still has the stock with the center muffler.........there are a ton of options out there for you.....depends on what you are looking for.......I'm thinking about an autotech which is offered in aluminum as well as Stainless but the stainless is going to set you back $600.....the alum is running about $290 or so......but that's just me....there's neuspeed, techtronics and autotech just for starters......
