Default 95 Jetta III GL

I have a 95 jetta III gl 2.0L 5spd that i just bought a few days ago and the speedometer and odometer work off and on (mostly off) the tach works fine no problems but i was wondering if anyone knew what the problem might be and how to fix it this is my first VW so i might need some tips on where parts are located. thanks James

now iam also smelling gas in my oil if anyone knows anything about this be much appreciated

your check engine light should be on. your spedo problem is the result of a faulty vehicle speed sensor and gas in oil most the time = fried piston rings, do a compression check to find out

my check engine light isnt on. how easy is it to replace the speed sensor on this car.

i have the same carbut the bolt is all rused so i cant tell wat size/type bit i need can anyone help me out on this?

The bolt that holds the speed sensor on the transmission. It's all rusted and looks like there was another bit broken in it. I have tried using pliars and other tools like torques bits and Allen keys. Torqes bit have come the best size but I don't know if I should heat the bolt then try or try and clean out the old materiall?
