2005 Jetta 2.5 5cyl. broken/slipped timing chain(?)
So I drove my 2005 Volkswagen Jetta (value) w/2.5 Liter 5 Cylinder (135,000 miles) about 1 1/4 (engine cold when started) to my favorite coffee shop on my way to work last Friday and after returning to the car about 4 minutes later - car would not start(check engine light on). Towed it to the mechanic and he told me the timing chain broke?/came loose?/jumped? and that I had no compression(not sure if no compression means none on any cylinders or little on some). The mechanic says the best route for repair is a rebuilt engine. My friend who is a shady tree mechanic says I should have this engine accessed by someone else and he feels the best route would probably be to have this engine serviced (replace bent valves etc). How often does this happen to this model engine? Can the mechanic tell without replacing the head if/which valves are bent? Does this happening when just starting the engine when not fully warm help my chances of there not being any major damage? Is this for sure a interference engine? I would really appreciate any advice on what to ask the mechanic and what options I should pursue..........,

Welcome to the forum.
I wasn't aware the 2006 Jetta 2.5 TDI had a timing chain I thought they were belt drive.
The timing belts should be changed as regular intervals around 80k miles so if its a timing belt its way overdue and they do break.
You either strip the cylinder head and replace the bent valves or you find a replacement engine.

i recently drove a Jetta of one of my friends husband. The drive was over all good but felt a bit sluggish. I don't know what was that but it was definitely not the engine otherwise it would have squealed at least once.
