Default 2003 GLI Starting Problems

So my car has been having some crazy issues electronically... When trying to start the car it turns on for a quick second then shuts right back off. Because of this I thought it was just as simple as an immoblizer problem since the immoblizer light kicked on when the key was point in, but that wasn't the case.

I took my car to an authorized volkswagen dealership and they told me that they couldn't find out where the problem was but they think it has to do something with my instrument cluster and the ecu not communicating correctly. I do remember when my car randomly shut off that the cluster went crazy... The Gas and Oil Temperature guages went past their maximum mark.

Does this sound right? Will a faulty instrument cluster cause my vehicle to not start?
