2002 jetta automatic trans problem

we have an 02 jetta gls. while i was still working at a local vw dealer, the techs were telling me that the auto trans in the car was of a defective lot and they said it should be changed. so, they changed the trans. what was happening was it would bang into second gear while upshifting while cold. it certainly did! and the replacement did also. then they put another trans in. it did also. so the lead tech took the car under his wing and found out that the car had the wrong transmission control module in it from the factory and it was actually the problem. so he ordered a replacement and installed it and programmed it. trans still banged. he figured the tranny was damaged from being used with the old tcm. so he ordered another tranny(3 rd one!). it still continued to have a harsh upshift so he said bring it in. he could not tell me what he was going to do about it so i didn't. we live with it. however, what i noticed when we were on a highway trip recently, is that the car is turning 3,800 rpm at 80 mph. this doesn't seem the way it was prior to all of the tranny changes. you guys correct me if i am wrong, i do not believe vw wanted 3,800 at 80 from that motor(2.0 gas). does anyone know if the tranny has an overdrive after 4th gear? if so, this one isn't working. i did stop by the dealer and the service writers are for the most part clueless. need some help from you guys! the rpm thing is really bothering me. seems too high. of all of the 100's of cars i test drove in 7 years for 2 different dealers, never drove a car that rev'd that high except a 2011 bmw m-3. otherwise all the other cars were in the 2,600 to 2,900 range
