2001 Jettta Exhaust Rattle...
Hey guys...first post, be nice
Recently, my 2001 Jetta with 155k miles starting exhibiting a horrible exhaust rattle at random RPMs. I took it to a small town repair shop, which quoted me $800 for a new catalytic converter and installation.
My heart sank, and I now drive a 2001 Jetta with a horrible rattle. Here's my question...Is he right? Is there no way to get rid of this rattle except for a new catalytic converter? If you go to eBay, or a parts shop, you can find 'universal' cats for under $200...whats the deal?

RE: 2001 Jettta Exhaust Rattle...
I know exactly what noise you're talking about. Sounds like a rock in the sheet metal that comes and goes as it pleases...I've got it. I crawled underneath my car and put pressure on every bit of exhaust and tin under there and couldn't pinpoint it. Later on I took it to the dealer and they told me the same story you got. Not worth the money. One of these days when I get some time, I'm going to pull the cat off and hammer out the catalyst. I've done this before to other vehicles with no negative consequences. Plus side, your get a throaty exhaust note and hopefully one less rattle. Don't do this in a state that checks emissions. I live in nebraska and don't have to worry about it. Good luck.

any consenquences...?
i have the same EXACT problem. i have a 2000 jetta with about 126k miles. same issue. been driving it like that for about 5k miles and i've had it! if i were to hollow out the catalyst is their any consequences with the car...? for example would i get a trouble code because of the 02 sensor or any other issues as far as the running or performance of the vehicle...? because i dont wanna go through with it and have it not run smootlhy anymore making me go out and spent the money on a new cat that i was trying to save in the first place. lol if so how would one hollow it out the easyest....? does this mean i have to cut it and weld it back on...? please help. =/
