2001 GLX might be dead :(
Hi All,
I need some assistance from my VW brothers. I have a 2001 GLX and up until this past weekend, it was in great shape. Had it for 10 years and it has 175K miles on it. This past weekend, I was on the highway and I heard a loud compression sound. On the dash, several warning lights lit up, and I received the STOP sign on my dash. So I pulled over, and checked the vitals and all looked fine. Took the car to the shop, and they looked at it and this is what they found: 2 cylinders had lost compression, the others had low compression. Root cause - They believe the timing chain skipped. Now I never heard this before, but they quoted me 7100.00 US to fix it. Well I told them I'm coming to get my car. But here is my question, can a timing chain skip, and if it does, can it cause your cylinders to lose compression? Oh, and they say it's possible that I "might" have a bad piston. Thanks for any help you guys can lend. |
timing chain can skip and it will mess up your timing and cause misfires also it can cause your pistons to hit your valves.
In my opinion i would get a second opinion from another mechanic before anything |
