2000 MKIV 2.0L engine lifter noise

Hello,
I have a 2000 Jetta GL 2.0L with 133K miles on it. Have noticed a ticking noise and my VW mechanic told me could be a lifter. He said to try adding a quart of Lucas oil additive when the next quart of oil was needed. Tried but ticking noise continues the same.
My question is if I was to fix the lifter(s), how much $$ should this work cost?? Am I looking at a full rebuild of the engine?
Right now I also have a bad AC compressor and evaporator so I'm wondering if my Jetta is at the end of it's life and if I should start thinking of replacing it :(.
Also, is this lifter problem going to cause a full breakdown in the middle of the road??
Need opinions! Help!
Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the forum. Attachment 2885

They do suffer from camshaft and lifter problems.

VW and Audi TDI camshaft wear: camshaft, lifter, and bearing inspection and replacement - PD engine

From your car description I can't make out if you have a TDI.

Jetta is model year 2000, engine is 2.0L, not TDI.

I recorded a video of the engine noise:

So is the video I posted the normal sound of a 2.0L engine then?

Is that the sound from your motor or one you've found on YouTube?

There is something wrong with that motor but its hard to identify from that video. You need to remove the cam cover and check out the camshaft and lifters.

When was the oild and filter changed last and did you use the correct VW spec oil?

I've shown you the link for camshaft and lifter inspection is going to be the same on your engine.
