2000 Jetta Idle Rough Problem?

Hey People

i just got this jetta a few months ago...

its a 2000 Jetta GL 2.0 Inline 4

at idle its rough some times, when it is in gear its worse, i have been putting it in neutral when im in traffic.... it feels like it is chugging or wanting to almost stall?

when its driving its fine, it has a little pep and no problems, the oil was a little low 2 weeks ago so i topped it up and it is at the same level still...

its a family car so it dosent have any stories... its was my sisters from new and its always been used as the fuel saving get to work car...

should i go to a dealer or is it just simple fix / common problem?

please help....

its sounds like it could be an ignition coil, but the check engine light be on also

You need to bring it to a mechanic and have them hook it up to the computer and see if you get any codes. It could be your MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor). In most cases you would also be getting poor gas mileage and low performance out of the vehicle.

Also, as '03gli mentioned, an ignition coil would also be another guess. In both instances, the check engine light SHOULD have come on. However, my Engine light never came on and when I brought my car in for another issue I got a code for one of my ignition coils being faulty.

You definitely need to get it diagnosed and get the codes. Definitely shop around for prices. I think a non-dealer Certified Mechanic will be cheaper for the diagnostic. Most dealers will charge you about $90 just for hooking the car up to the computer, then repairs are above and beyond that initial price tag. My mechanic charged me $16 to run the diagnostic.
