is it a factory alarm? if so, did it used to have an aftermarket alarm?

I am having an issue with my 01 jetta gls vr6 with the alarm. I can use the remote to open the car but when i open the drivers door it doesn't recognize that i opened the door. The light doesn't come on and it doesn't deactivate the alarm. So if I don't put the key in it before it locks again or some one else doesn't open another door the alarm doesn't deactivate. I have looked every where for a switch maybe or even in the factory repair manual and can't figure out what it is to replace it. Does any one know what it may be?
