Default 1999 old body style shifter issues

Hey guys, I have a 1999 old body style, manual, vr6, jetta. I bought it a few months ago but ever since I bought it I have been having problems with my shifter. It has a lot of back and forth play when it's in gear and when it's in neutral. It feels really lose like there is something wrong in the cables and not the actual shifter. Sometimes I'll acidentally go from 2nd to 1st, instead of 2nd to 3rd because the loseness makes it slip into a gear I didn't want. Also, when the car is in neutral, the shifter sits to the side and not straight up like it is supposed too.

If you guys could tell me what part is going bad or how to fix the exsisting one that would be great

Thanks

might be your linkages are messed up..... my buddy had a P.O.S Honda that did the same thing and it was caused by a rusted linkage and a busted plate that sits under the boot... my suggestion, get her up on jacks and take a look underneath.... wiggle the linkage a little bit, check the bearings and the bushings on the actual stick itself... best advice i can give ya
