Default 1999 mk4 Jetta, cannot shift into reverse.

The other day when shifting into reverse from a stop, my car went forward instead of backwards. After taking some time and shifting through all the positions I have come to realize that all of my gears seem to have "shifted over" to the left. In order to get into first, I need to push down on the shifter (same thing needed to go into reverse) and all the way left and up. If I try to put it into first like normal it goes into third. I am able to physically put the car in reverse with the linkage under the hood but can not get into it from inside the car. I am capable of doing my own work on my car, but sometimes need the know-how. If anyone out there could help, that would be amazing.
