1999.5 Jetta GLS 2.0L wont start - ECM fried?

First I must confess I am a complete noob in this scene. I know a bit about cars and like tinkering with stuff so please bear with me.



I Just ‘inherited’ a VW Jetta 1999.5 2.0L that had been lying around for some time, I have an intention of fixing her up. The car has 140000 miles. So far I have run into a multitude of problems, the main problem being the engine just won’t spark, it cranks but won’t start. So far I have checked/replaced the following


1. Spark plugs – new
2. Coil pack – new
3. Wires – new
4. Engine Oil – OK
5. Timing belt – OK
6. Fuel Line – OK (pumps and injectors are working fine).


I tested for spark on the wires while cranking and got nothing. I got myself a repair manual, it looks like someone had tried to troubleshoot/fix electronics because I found some plugs loose others jumped. I have removed and fixed all these. I know I have a short somewhere because the stock radio promptly blows its fuse whenever I attempt to connect it. The strange thing is the first time I fired her up it started OK and idled for about 5 minutes before dying.

Someone suggested my ECM was toast. Could this be the case?

I would really appreciate it if anyone pointed me to the right direction on what components to start troubleshooting or replacing. I hope I did not bore you with the lengthy text!
