1996 GLS Jetta Question

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new here to the forums and I had a quick question to pick your brain with. I have a fairly old VW Jetta from 1996. I bought it with 134,000 miles and I have driven it to death over the last 9 years...with no MAJOR problems.

About 5 years ago, I left my car parked in the driveway and my neighbor came to my door telling me the car was out in the street. Weird. I didn't think much of it, I just made sure I kept my e-Brake on at all times when I am parked.

Yesterday, I was in the driveway again and when I took the brake off, I immediately started drifting down the driveway and the clutch was not depressed. It didn't drift at full speed, but it would drift a foot and then stop for 5 seconds, then drift a foot and stop for 5 seconds, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be going wrong with it? I talked to someone who is knowledgeable about cars and he stated it sounds like the clutch could be on its last leg. Oddly, it has never slipped on me.

Any ideas?

VW has good cause to espouse this philosophy. Its cars, especially the Jetta and Golf, are appealing to persons who outlook driving as certain thing other than meagre transportation. They respond rapidly, precisely and easily to instructions. They become an extension of the driver.

Well the correct principle for any vehicle thats parked is to leave it in gear (manual) or leave it in park (auto) just in case the handbrake mechanism or e-brake should fail.

Ideally you need the motor scanning with VAG-COM\VCDS or an EOBD II scanner to see if any error codes come back, if so post them.
