Default 1996 with 2.0- interference or non?

I am hoping to become a Volkswagen owner soon and am looking at one on Craigslist but it has a broken timing belt and I was told that if its an interference engine I'll need to replace the engine. I, of course, don't want to do this.
Is the 2.0, 5 speed, 4 cyl. an interference or a non interference?
