1993 VW Cabby with 1998 VW Jetta ABA swap
I have a 1993 MK1 Cabby who the previous owner almost completed the ABA swap. I was basically given the vehicle and have hardly any $$ into it yet. The motor came from a 1998 vw jetta. He spliced the obd2 wiring into the stock fuse box. The car was not running when I got it because of the fuel pump. I wired a separate fuel pump relay and used the obd2 ecu to provide ground to the fuel pump relay. Once I had it wired up correctly, the car now starts and runs. I wanted to make sure the pump stops working when the car stalls or engine is shut off which it does because of the way its wired to the ecu. So I will at least not burn to death in the event of an accident. Believe me I tried following this threads advice for the fuel pump but this works for me. With not being familiar with wiring before, I have gained a lot of knowledge reading the wiring diagrams from my Bentleys.
I need assistance with two issues: 1. When I rev the engine up to 2000 rpm, my oil light and my oil buzzer come on. I took an old VW mechanic's(Dave's Auto World out of Duncannon PA) advice and idled the car for 20 minutes and dumped the oil and trashed the oil filter. I installed a new oil pump. Then replaced the oil and filter. I hooked up a oil pressure gauge tester at the engine block (low pressure sensor) then at the oil filter (high pressure sensor). Both read roughly 5 bar(~70psi) when the engine is cold and similar when its idling for a while. Note that the wiring to the gauges in the center console are disconnected but the oil pressure gauge goes up to 5 bar which gives me some reason to be concerned. Note: I am using 5w40 oil and authentic black vw oil filter 2. I had the car idling for roughly 20 minutes and went to check the gauge, then my arm grazed the upper coolant pipe and burned my forearm a bit. I checked the radiator fans by jumping the wires feeding at the bottom right of the radiator and they work. The radiator was not hot. Should I start by draining the coolant and replacing the thermostat? Then proceed to look for blockages Note:I am running genuine VW Audi G13 red coolant at 50/50. What is some troubleshooting I can do regarding these issues? I do have a Bentley for both the 1993 MK1 Cabby and 1998 jetta. I am thinking about running the oil pressure switch directly to the instrument cluster but not to sure if it will solve the buzzer being on after 2000 rpms. I am wondering if both of these issues some how connected. The 1998 Jetta I can't tell you the correct oil pressure but I'm guessing its 2.0 bar (30 psi) @ 2000 rpm.
Your garage measured Both read roughly 5 bar(~70psi) which sounds high. A 2005 Jetta 2.0 FSI BLR 2.7-4.5 bar @ 2000 rpm Manufacturer: VW, Date(s) Used: 03/1992-12/1998, Model: Jetta, Engine Code: ABA, 85Kw, 115PS, 2.0 Ltr, 4 Cyls, Remarks: California: Bosch Motronic M2.9 The oil pressure switch is a simple circuit easy to check out. The switch just earths out the cable which puts the light on. Check for any bad connections or cables that are shorting to earth. |
