1990 Carat randomly electically dies?

What is probably at fault here? The car starts/runs beautifully, but it will be just driving along and it will all of a sudden just die, and have no system power including the on 24/7 clock. If you turn the key to the off position, the clock will come back on (once in awhile it will just stay dead though). Turn the key back to either on or start and it will be dead again. Keep turning it back and forth and it will keep it up. After awhile when you turn it on, the dash LED's that are normally bright will come on dimly and sometimes send the tach needle up and will then slowly dim out dead again, but nothing from the engine. Eventually it will decide to start normally usually after I have poked and prodded all the wired connections in the engine for the millionth time. Everybody gives me a different answer when I take it in as to what the problem is. Any ideas?

probably a bad ground somewhere, but look online for your tsb's and see if there is anything about that
