1982 Jetta - Tail Lights & Fuel Gauge Out

Hi,

New forum member with a request for assistance.

[sm=helpout.gif]

I recently purchased a first gen Jetta diesel and lost power. My brother-in-law came over and found that the main power wire was loose in the wiring harness, fiddled with the connection and power came back.

The next day I noticed that the fuel gauge was not working and a few days ago found that my rear lights weren't working either.

I'm in the process of looking for a repair manual, none of the parts stores in my area stock one for a car that old.

In the mean time though, I was wondering whether anyone had some tips they could provide while I try to troubleshoot this. I don't have a manual yet, so I don't know the fuse or relay layout.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jay

There aren't any relays forthose so scratch that. Fiddling around with main power wires is a good way to blow fuses. Just go through each one looking for blown ones.

Thank you for the rapid reply.

I went down and check the fuses, they all looked good.

Then I pressed on all of the connections behind the fuses, they were all good.

The I looked behind the fuse box and saw a big yellow connector that wasn't connected to anything. I felt around on the back of the fuze box and found a block of pins that felt like they matched the pins on the connector.

Plugged it in, turned the car on, hit my turn signal and saw happy turn signal blink-age.

Now I can drive at night without fear of getting a ticket. Definitely gonna have to remember that one.
