Default 1980's Jettas... how to improve MPG?

I usually get about 30 mpg on the highway with my 5 speed gasoline engine. Anyone know a 5th gear swap or??? to lowwer the damn RPMs? Traffic runs between 75 and 85 over here; and it makes the RPMs run too high for best economy...

If anyone has some practical cost effective ideas. And NO, I'm not going to bother swapping in a diesel engine.

well....if you relly must, id swap in a TDI 5th gear or something of that sort. im not sure what the ratio is, but just get a higher ratio 5th gear, but your power will be terrible
