03 jetta gl 2.0l coil

Her dealer has told my daughter that her 2003 GL 2.0L has a "cracked coil". The replacement cost is on the order of $600. I have worked on cars most of my life and feel comfortable doing most types of maintenance. My question is: would a bad coil set a trouble code? wouldn't damp weather cause a miss? how prevalent is this type of malady? how hard is it to replace the coil? The car runs perfect and does set a code for a bad O2 Sensor Heater.

I don't have a repair manual so would appreciate guidance on the best source for repair info.

Thanks for any and all help.

It's very easy to see if your coil is cracked, take the spark plug wires off of it and look for cracks. And yes, it would show some sort of ignition code. Replace that O2 sensor and you'll be good to go. If your not going to get a repair manual the best source for repair info is here. I'm here seven days a week. And by the way, to prevent you from going to the dealership again, you can get a coil for around $75.
