Default 01 Jetta AWD engine swap

I have an 01 Jetta that had a bad oil pump and the engine blew. It was an AWW motor. I got an AWW motor out of a junkyard and installed it only to find out it had a crack in the block. They gave me an AWD motor and told me to keep the old motor to part it out for my trouble. I guess I can get my money back from parting out the motor? Anyway I began swapping over all the parts from the AWW motor to the AWD motor. I put the AWD motor in the car and when I went for a drive the transmission didn't want to shift out of 3rd gear and the speedometer doesn't work. The CEL is on and it's bringing up a speed sensor code. I wanted to check the transmission fluid first before I replaced the speed sensor to make sure it wasn't low on fluid and that is what is causing the transmission malfunction. Does anyone know if it is just a speed sensor issue or if the transmission may be low on fluid? And how do you get a reading on the transmission fluid? I noticed there is no dip stick. Thanks for any help
