VW GTI 1.8T, to buy or not to buy...

Hi, new to the forum here! I am usually a Toyota and Honda guy, but I have an opportunity to buya 2002 VW GTI 1.8T, stock. It has 125k and is automatic. The catch is either the motor is bad or the turbo needs replaced or rebuilt. As soon as the car is started is puffs white smoke immediately. This made me think is was a blown head gasket. But then someone mentioned the seals could be bad in the turbo. I am not sure, I am not familiar with turbo cars. After car was shut off, I noticed a little puddle of oil in the exhaust tips. So I checked the oil and there was none showing on the dip stick. So maybe it just needs the turbo. Are these GTI's reliable or do they need constant maintence? Is aturbo timer good to have if I do get the car? Any info will be greatly appreciated.
