2006 Jetta TDI manual with just over 205 000 Km.

Last evening, after we came home, the left side "daytime running lights" did not switch off.
I restarted the engine, moved the car a foot or two and shut down again, that time the lights went out automatically as they are supposed to.

Earlier in the week, after arriving home after dark, we did not switch off the head lights, we thought they would go out automatically. Well, we had a dead battery in the morning. I put the battery charger on and recharged the battery.
The car started, and seemed to run OK afterward.
Any clue as to why the lights did not go out?
