New, Used or Refurbed Engine?
Hi there, I've got a VW GTI Mk IV with a 1.8T engine. The timing belt broke and the auto shop it's at suggests I replace the engine or the cylinder head.
They almost cost the same because of the high cost of the cylinder head replacement. What are your thoughts on this? And when replacing an engine, what are considerations? I have a used engine with 72K on it currently available, with recently replaced timing belt and water pump for $3.5k. But it only comes with a 90 day warranty. |

You might get away with replacing the bent valves. https://volkswagenforum.com/forum/ne...gnature-34185/ |
Hi Keith, sorry, the timing belt and water pump were in need of replacement on my engine (which had 105k miles on it). The new engine I'm being offered has 72k miles and a replaced timing belt and water pump.
I'm just not sure what a replacement engine should cost, what the risks are and whether that's a poor warranty. |
Well you take a risk of buying any second had engine its pot luck.
Is there any sort of warranty 30 days or is it a private sale? https://volkswagenforum.com/forum/ne...gnature-34185/ |
