idle problems 1999 golf gti

i purchased my golf gti about 6 months ago after a long search for a non turbo standard 3 door1.8 and i love it. however within a month of me having the car i started to get idle problems. i had the car looked at and was advised to take it to volkswagen where after diagnostics a fault with the throttle bodies was found so they replaced what needed replacing, it wasnt cheap either. much to my despair it didnt cure the problem so they are now saying after several hours of investigation costing me a fortune that the ecu needs changing. fair enough ifit will fix the problem but 5 months on volkswagen are still telling me that my ecu is still on back order and they havent got a clue when it will be delivered. just wondered if anyone else has suffered any similar problems because volkswagen are making out i'm the only person its happened to and have even mentioned it may be impossible to fix. i find this disgusting as the car is not even 7 years old, you dont expect it from german engineering.

Join the club, is not what is cracked up to be. VW service is pathetic at best.
