Having issues with rear brakes

I have a 2009 Jetta TDI. I have only owned it for little more than a month. A couple days ago when my wife was driving it, she noticed that the rear brakes had gotten hot enough that they were smoking. The brakes looked fine, and several hours later driving home, they were fine. A couple days later after arriving home, I smelled the hot brakes and when I put my hand near the rear tires, the were really hot. Has anyone else had this problem or know what it may be. Thanks.

The 2009 Jetta doesn't have an electric handbrake was the handbrake fully off. There should be a light on the dash if the handbrake is on. I've never heard of this problem.

Thanks for the reply Keith. It did not appear that the handbrake was engaged and the light was not lit up on the dash board. Have driven it the last couple of days and have had no issues with the brakes. I wasn't sure if it was an issue that the TDI's had because I could not locate the problem.
