BUYING A 4TH GEN TDI, ANY COMMON PROBLEMS TO LOOK FOR? NEED SOME INPUT!

Looking at an 03 Jetta TDI, and I hear lots of people bashing the TDI's and on another note lots of people love them, so i'm kind of 60/40 and need some info on what to look for especially in a TDI that can cause problems so I don't end up with a lemon.

RE: BUYING A 4TH GEN TDI, ANY COMMON PROBLEMS TO LOOK FOR? NEED SOME INPUT!

I have an 02 Jetta TDI, automatic. Love it

It took me awhile to get used to driving as my previous car was a Grand Prix GTP, The Jetta is not a rocket. I would stay away from an automatic if at all possible, mine has 148,000 and is starting to slip. A very important maintenance item is the timing belt, MAKE SURE you replace it at scheduled intrevals...I was over by 7,000 miles and learned the hard way (replaced the engine).
Turbo's have been known to go out - not a cheap fix (mine is still ok)

Other than that I would by another one in a flash.
