woes of the 1.8T? Need some advice

Hi, I'm kinda new to the VWs - I'm looking to buy a car that's fun to drive, but isn't gonna crap out on me or be a pain in the ass. I've been looking at a 2000 golf 1.8T - 90,000km (approx 56,000miles). Mentioned this to a friend of mine and he immediately told me off about them. Basically, I'm not a racer, but I AM a bit of an agro driver. He said, the way I drive, I'd end up blowing the engine unless I wanted to change the oil every couple thousand km. He told me of a buddy of his who's already gone through 3 1.8t engines in an older model. Plus, he said I'd feel like I was ALWAYS rallying, instead of just cruising wherever.

Question, is this true? Should I be scared off?

X2, Mk4 GTI 1.8T, you wont blow anything up unless you run a big turbo or something ridiculous on it, but i drive pretty darn aggressively and havent had a single problem, and havent heard of anybody that have until they change turbos or try to somehow pull more a ridiculous amount of HP out of the stock motor and i know a lot of people with 1.8s.
if youre worried about turbo issues get a VR6, still fast minus the turbo
