replacing distributor on an '86 Golf - alignment
Well, I assumed the distributor would be like the one on my bug - that there'd be only one way it could go in, so I didn't mark anything. Now I don't know where TDC is or how to find it or how to put the distributor back in properly. I just yanked it out without aligning anything with anything.
What is the way to get it back in right?
It's like Mrs. Thrall said in 12th grade English - "When you assume, you make an *** of U and ME"... I sure am feelin' it!
DUMB MISTAKE!!!
Help will be most appreciated... Also welcome: discussion on "the distributor should last the life of the car" vs. replacing distributors at some point...

there is a smal mark on the distributor that you point the rotor at
it is where the cap sits on
check the oil pump drive you need to line it up too so it fits in the bottom of the distributor
they do go bad sometimes check the small ground wires that are on the coolant flange on the side of the head
