Default 2000 Golf banging in rear

I bought a 2000 Golf GLS 1.8t about 3 years ago.
The guy I bought it from had lowered it.
I drove it,fixed it a bit, put money into it, etc.
About 10 months ago I started getting a banging in the rear suspension - passenger rear, to be specific. Maybe 3 months later, it starts to sound like it’s the drivers rear as well. A bang when I go over large or small potholes and low sewer caps - like there’s square tires on the car and I have cinder blocks in my hatchback!!
I replaced the shock mounts (they weren’t bad) and the shocks (one blown). Nothing changed. Still banging.
I put OEM shocks in the rear (14- 1/2”) to replace the aftermarket (12-1/4”) dude had put it. IT STOPPED BANGING.
2 weeks later it’s banging again. WTF?!
Ive checked the bushings on both sides- they’re not torn and seem to be intact as I can’t shove a screwdriver in there at all.
Anyone have any ideas? I can’t crank the stereo any louder. I need to deal with it.

Check all components for wear and play and springs as they will bang when broken.
