How to read OBD I codes from 94 Golf?
Hey VW gurus,
My timing belt broke in my 94 golf and I towed it to a neighborhood mechanic. He replaced timing belt and car is running but… check engine light is coming on 3 seconds after ignition is turned on and car feels sluggish and burns lots more fuel then before. I took it back and he unplugged battery for 2 min to reset computer, that did not help. Than he tried to read codes with the OTC scan tool but he could not establish communication with the PCM. He says that he disconnected only MAF and some other sensor. My car has OBD II connector but it is OBD I system.
Is there a way to extract DTC from 94 golf without taking a trip to the dealer?

All sensors have to be reconnected or Check Engine light will come on...it sounds like new timing belt has been installed with timing slightly off, all the problems you are having seem to check this out, also the Engine is what is called an interferance fit , which means when the timing beltbreaks the valves will hit the pistons...make sure that the Mechanic that did the work checked out that valves were not damaged
