High temperature + Check engine light

High temperature + Check engine light
Hi,
I recently purchased a Golf 2003, 39K, from a dealer. While driving today (going at work, just a 15 mins ride on the freeway), the 'high temperature' indicator lit up and the temperature gauge was maxed out at 260 F. After a few hours, I checked both the coolant liquid level and the oil level and everything looked fine so I didn't look further. Going back home tonight, the same thing happened (a bit more rapidly this time), but on top of that, the 'check engine' lit up and was on until I arrived home. I didn't notice anything particular with the engine while driving.
A friend of mine says that such signals can occur in case of an electrical defect (which he said is fairly common on VW from those years) and that the car should be fine to drive. But I'm still worrying about these two symptoms being the sign of something bad happening. I'm definitely bringing the car to a mechanics sometimes soon, but I'm wondering if there is something more I should or shouldn't do (like, driving the car) or if anybody faced the same thing before, what is was and what you did. I'm a total newbie with everything having to do with mechanics, so don't hesitate to state the obvious, because I probably don't know what the obvious is
Thanks,
jay.b
