Default golf won't jump start

I didn't start my '97 golf for about a week, so I wasn't surprised when it needed a jumpstart. The thing is, when I tried to jump start it, it just didn't work. Eventually the dash lights came on when I turned the key but the engine didn't turn over, instead it just made a weird noise that I can't really explain. It sort of sounded like a dying cat. Could it be that it was just really cold today? The battery isn't old. It was charging for about 10 minutes, could it be that I just need to charge it longer? What do I do??
