Default Golf 1.6 se engine misfire

Hi all, i recently bought a 2001 Golf 1.6se 16v with an AZD engine code, a few days ago the engine management light started to flash amber then came on constantly, shortly after that the engine started to misfire, after some advice i bought and fitted 4 new spark plugs and 4 new coils, i went to the local garage and he plugged in his computer which came up with a misfire detected on cylinder number 2 (fault code P0302) when he cleared the fault i went away and the car ran fine, for a few hours, then the engine management light came back on! and the misfire returned! i went back to the garage, he plugged it back in and the misfire on cylinder number 2 had re-appeared! in the hope i had been supplied a faulty coil i changed it and it was fine, til now, and its doing it again, however, if i leave the car for 1 or 2 hours, the engine management light stays on but it runs fine, for a while, yhen starts to misfire again, anybody got any suggestions as to what the problem could be or has anybody had the same problems? i would be really greatful if somebody could help me with this rather annoying problem.

Sounds like you need a new ignition control module.

I unfortunately have no idea where it is on your car.

Had car into garage today, for some reason they cleaned the throttle body out and said they had speeded the tickover up as it was at 600 rpm, though when i picked it up it was still the same! they did a compression test on it and found number 2 cylinder was well down on compression and number 4 was down a bit but not loads, they say it needs re-ringing! its done 85,500 miles, although a mechanic i know who is a vw specialist i know says it will be the head gasket so im taking it to him tomorrow to check it over, all electrics are fine on the car, will post a message when i find out anymore.
