Camshaft? Other?

Hopefully, Wikipedia is correct in telling me a Touran is just a longer Golf.

I've got a 2007 diesel 2000CC / 140hp / 103kW TDI BMM engine in the Touran and the dealer says it needs a new camshaft. For $4000 dollars.

They may be correct, but it doesn't make sense to me. We were driving along, no problems whatsoever, then started climbing a little hill. The cruise control kicked in and revved us up to maintain the speed (all of 100kph), and all of a sudden the engine started making horrible noises.

Now, to me, a camshaft whose lobes are worn isn't going to suddenly start making noises...it would get there over time, no? Not running quiet > running like the engine was going to knock itself apart in a matter of seconds.

I'd think that was more likely to be the timing belt slipped a notch, or the turbo blew (but it sounds like crap at idle, too, so shouldn't be that). No more than notch, though, I'd think. Otherwise the valves would be kissing the pistons.

Am I wrong in my thinking?

And, if not, and I just have to make an adjustment, where can I find out how to make sure the camshaft and crankshaft are in the correct position? All the tutorials I can find seem to be for the 1.9 engine, but the 2.0 has a...thing...at the end of the camshaft. (No idea what it is. LOL)

I'm not nearly as stupid as I sound. I've just never worked on a VW (or diesel) before.
