Default Buying a golf mk4 - are these likely to be problems?

I'm looking at buying a 2003 1.6 Golf Match and would appreciate any opinions regarding 2 concerns I have:
1. When the car is running an unidentified component (black box with a few pipes running to it on the drivers side right next to the wing, next to the power steering unit) makes a ticking noise. Not loud, only audible when the bonnet is open.
2. The gear box, feels fine when driven, but is a bit scratchy when waggled around i.e. when checking in neutral. Are either of these likely to be major issues? i.e. engine problem or gearbox? It seems to drive sweetly and not be in bad condition otherwise.
Thanks for your opinion.
Martin.
