buy or pass on a 1987 golf gti

i am sorry i did not know weather to post here or on the gti forms for a fast responce and i figured you guys and gals could tell me some more of the common non motor related issues these cars have. ALSO pics are in the GTI for so please give me some imput Thanks

Well as some of you know i am new here and am trying to pick between two 70's era beetles or a or a 1987 GTi. Now i have always been a fan of this style Gti but this one has its issues.
Heres what is good that i know of
Factory 16V car
5speed with MKIII weighted shift rod
Complete very nice interior
Full set of Black Pleather red stripe door cards
Mint seats from later model GTi (90-?)
Two sets of bumpers (big and small)
BBS RAs 14 inch VW fronts and 15 inch BMW rears
Techtonics 4 into 1 race header
Solid small doors
Solid quater panels
Solid Rockers
Sunroof (non-leaking)

Now what the owner tells me is wrong with it :
Non running. Not sure why. I bought the car with a blown head and a good bottom end. Put a good used head on the car, reasembled it all and started the car once. Ran for a second sputtered and died. Seems to be a spark problem. Car is getting fuel and will crank all day long just does not want to fire.
Headliner needs replacement
Passengers floor board needs replacement (Only real rust on the car)

I was wondering what your thoughts on it were? I have seen it in person and always looked twice at it (down the street from my freinds house). A freind of mine had a jetta with the same problem. I am thinking coil. What do you guys think ? Owner wants 900.00 but i don't have that kind of money to throw at a unkown car that i did not work on myself. So what should i offer? looks lowered too

RE: buy or pass on a 1987 golf gti

two things I would do.
1. Pull a plug, reconnect the spark plug wire and turn it over, see if the plug is getting spark. If it is then the distributor could be miswired - firing order. If it isn't then you have to back trace to figure out why there isn't any spark. Check with a 12volt light to see if the coil is getting the 12 volts.
2. Do a compression test. If you have low compression, it could be that the timing belt wasn't properly installed and it jumped some teeth. It is fairly easy to check the timing belt using the flywheel and the mark on the camshaft sprocket. If the belt is on correctly and you still have low compression then pass on buying the car unless you want to completely rebuild the engine.
