Default Ambient Temp sensor/AC

I'm new to this site and have just said hello in the new member's area. I have a Mk 4 golf and would like to ask a question:

I'm having a hard time with my ambient outside air temp gauge on the dash. It is currently reading -14c and never gets above -5c. This then affects the Air Con which doesn't work. I know the AC does work as the other day on a hot day while the car was sitting in the sun the temp gauge on the dash read -2c and then the AC kicked in. They must be linked.

I have replaced the sensor under the front bumper twice so it can't be that. I'm wondering if anyone out there has had a similar issue and could help!

thanks in advance everyone

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.
