Default alternate tires/wheels for 2017 Alltrack

I just picked up a nail in the sidewall of my 2017 Alltrack.
Why did VW choose such an odd size for the tires on this car? 205/55-17?
I am considering putting 16" wheels on the car so that I can choose from all the less expensive options available in that size.
What think ye: good or bad idea?
BTW, the tire well in the trunk is large enough to accommodate a full size spare.

You can Google the tyre companies to find the best deal and it shows the spec.

Spare wheels are normally space saver even though the well is big enough. Buying a new alloy with tyre is very expensive.

I just noticed where you are located, and it explains your question about the engine sizes in my cars: Europe always seems to have a greater selection in cars/options/available engines than we do in the States.
