'97 VW Golf - Evap Emissions Leak Problem- HELP!
 

We have a 1997 VW Golf that has the Check engine light on. We took it in to get a diagnostic and they suggested we change the gas cap. So we did and a few days later the light came back on. We went back and were told to go on this forum and ask for advice or suggestions from someone who may have had this problem or might know what is wrong. So if anyone can help, here are the codes that came up:

PO 442, PO 440 and PO 303.

they said 2 were Evaporation emissions leaks and the third was misfiring of a spark plug. the spark plug one we can change, but the other ones we have no clue. the mechanic said he checked all the hoses that go to the fuel tank and they were all fine.

hey i have the same evap problem did you fix yours? of so how.

Try checking all the braided hoses, for air leaks. Those tend to have cracks. If you find bad ones, just get new rubber hoses of the same size, at any of your local auto parts store... About the misfire, have you done a tune up recently?? If your going to replace the spark plug, I would recommend replacing all of them at the same time. Also, do a visual inspection of your plug wires. If you need more help, just let me know.

for your gas cap evap code error the solution is to buy a new breather valve for your gas tank. you can get them only form you VW dealer (25$) and is a 5 minuet fix! the breater valve is located at the top of your filler neck towards the back of your car! good luck
