95 Golf Serpentine belt issue

So, I bought a '95 Golf III GL (2.0 liter L4) used and it ran fine for about a year before the serpentine belt snapped. I tried replacing it, but the stock belt I bought was WAY too big. I ordered a couple other belt sizes and none fit my vehicle, one was about an inch too short, the other was about an inch too big.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm stuck.

I think it's possible that the previous owner may have made modifications to the car. The serpentine belt routing runs three wheels (alternator, water pump, AC, as well as the tensioner) and it looks same as the diagrams I've found on the internet.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Attachment 2663

Well according to my diagrams there can be 5 serpentine belts that fit.

1. Serpentine belt that doesn't use a tensioner and crankshaft and power steering pump.
2. Serpentine belt for an AC system.
3. One for crankshaft, AC pump, alternator and tensioner.
4. One for crankshaft, water pump and power steering pump.
5. Serpentine belt with tensioner and crankshaft and power steering pump. Crankshaft, water pump, alternator and tensioner.

Make sure the adjuster moves fully, get a smaller belt.
