Default 2001 golf 1.4 16v oil pressure problem,PLEASE HELP..thx

hi to all.i really need some advice.[&:]during a average journey 2 days ago my oil light came on,it was low on oil so i put 1ltr into it at a forecourt.on the way home theenginesort of made a slightshort sharp clunk and then preceeded to knock loudly. wemade it home, gave it a further 1ltr butno remedy.Im no mechanic but i think the light came on due to low oil pressure as opposed to low oil even though the oil was indeed low. I understand that the dashboard indicator light illuminates yellow, to advise of low oil level and red for the pressure.I may be wrong and so would really appreciate any advice that can be given.Could a valve of gone? The car has done 75 000 miles and is well maintained ect. So basically what would you guys do,im a vw nut like the rest having owned several mk2 gti s so i feel at home with a golf so i need to consider the options. If its a cheap fix id prob get it done, but my gut tells me its not.We may even give it a new lump!!So.. would amk41.6 engine go straight in using the existing gearbox?? Could i put a 2.0 or maybe even a 1.8 turbo!! at what point do you uprate the brakes 120 140 bhp??? thanks jookiemundo.[&o]
